When the plan was first announced it certainly caused a laugh or two but now the new law courts are completed few people are laughing. The courts have been built in one of the worst hit crime areas in Palma. Staff fear for their safety.
Hundreds of million of pesetas will have to be spent on making the new building a fortress. Witnesses and victims of crime will now have to walk through one of the most dangerous parts of the city so that they can see justice be done. This area is notorious for pick-pockets and bag-snatchers.
Unfortunately they have now been presented by the Justice Ministry with extra would-be targets. Unfortunately many of those heading for the law courts have already been victims of crime once.
Just watch this space because I am sure that we haven't heard the last of the new law courts and their controversial site. Perhaps, it would have been a better idea to have built a new police station there rather than the courts. It is not judges which are wanted in this area at this stage it is more police.
