By Jason Moore IS building more golf courses the answer to all of Majorca's ills? The local hoteliers have called for yet more courses to be built in an effort to revive Majorca's flagging tourism fortunes.

Parts of mainland Spain have been transformed into golfing paradises with “greens” as far as you can see. They are already cashing in on the alleged golfing boom so in the case of Majorca it is rather too late. Majorca already has some first rate greens which have hosted PGA events. A leading official from the organisation which represents all the major tour operators once told me that the number of golfers is still comparatively small and building your tourist industry around golf is not the best solution. I just don't understand why Majorca is trying to find new markets when its present model has been so successful. There is nothing wrong with package holidays. Effectively they made this island what it is today, a booming tourist destination. I don't think we need to build more marinas or golf courses what needs to be overhauled and up-dated is the package holiday market. Tour operators say that tourists want more value for money and great quality. This message needs to be received loud and clear and the appropriate action taken. There is a market for golf, there is a market for nautical holidays and there is a market for hiking, but the biggest market is package holidays. Instead of trying to dodge the issue we should take pride in welcoming the small army of tourists who come here every year. They have elected to come to the Balearics because it is a fantastic place and thanks to them we enjoy the lifestyle that we have. Millions of them don't play golf, don't have a yacht, they just want 10 days in the sun and a warm welcome.
