SIR,

Having just spent a great week on the island in Magalluf, which was cheaper for a days later and went for the same type of meal in a well known bar there. How things were different: no olives, only wine or water, smaller portions than the locals who were offered extra soup, not us. We felt we were not wanted the minute we said we wanted the menu del dia not a la carte. They could not get rid of us week for 4 of us than the 5 days we spent in Centre Parcs in February, two things happened. The first was watching the new tourist police keep catching the fruit and drinks sellers on the beach and confiscating their wares. On 1 day alone we saw them catch at least 4 of them and also watched an elderly gentleman who was being pestered by the fruit seller kick a load of sand into her box of melon and pineapple. Not a thing recommended to do but great to see all the same .

We went to Andraitx market where we went into a bar for the menu del dia. It was full of Spanish workers as well as me and my wife and two children. We had a great meal with wine, water, bread, olives and were treated no different to the workers. I wish I could remember the name of it but a jug of wine does not help the memory, it was opposite where you get off the service bus for the market. Top marks for this place. But on the other hand we found ourselves in Son Caliu 2 fast enough, so I know where my money will be spent in October when we come again. The resort bars, etc, need to take a long hard look at themselves and maybe realise why trade is down but anyway, a great holiday and we'll be back for more.
