Better to be safe than worry

By Jason Moore IF you warn people you are dammed and if you don't you suffer the same fate. Earlier this summer a warning was placed on the Foreign Office's website, in between thousands of other similar notices for places across the globe, carefully warning tourists that there had been an increase in the number of rape cases in the Calvia area. The whole idea of the travel warning system on the website is to do just this, warn travellers to be extra careful and alert them to possible problems. This is what the Foreign Office does, try to protect British citizens abroad with advice and information from their whole network of staff on the ground. But ofcourse sometimes such a warning is not well received because allegedly it could affect tourism. The Calvia council and local police force were said to be rather “disappointed” at the warning and the story was splashed across the Spanish media yesterday. I believe the phrase “it is better to be safe than sorry” rather sums up this story which has been blown out of all context. The Foreign Office were doing their job and they should not be criticised in anyway because it would be grossly unfair.
