By Jason Moore MY congratulations to the Balearic government and the various councils for organising the party at Bellver Castle on Tuesday. A great venue, good music and song and food and drink. The only complaint I heard is that there were too many speeches (but you can't win them all)! I hope this New Year party will become a yearly event because bringing the various foreign associations together is always a good idea and perhaps it may lead to greater things.

Wouldn't it be fantastic if the larger English-speaking associations could work more closely with their German or Scandinavian counterparts? Afterall, we all share common ground, a love for Majorca and at the end of the day common problems, such as paperwork or even making sense of some of the more complicated Spanish laws. I have always believed that the local authorities should do more for non-Spanish European Union residents. I once said so in this space but I was told in no-uncertain terms by one angry Spanish reader of this paper that no-one should get preferential treatment as we were all equal and that the community shouldn't be split into various sections. But whatever, it was still a nice idea, and it is always nice to be remembered. And the community is not being split because these days we are all united, in one thing, we've got the vote.
