WE should all be looking at our homes on Majorca with new eyes. For years we have used a slightly apologetic tone when admitting to acquaintances in the UK that we live on Majorca since we know the island's image is not always as up-market as we would like it to be. But an article in The Sunday Times last weekend said Majorca is becoming “irresistible” to large numbers of the world's super-rich. The opinion is Matthias Kuhn's, described in the article as “estate agent and self–styled property visionary”. “The trend is set: it's not possible to stop it,” said Mr Kuhn, “Where else can you get to from within Europe in two hours? The Caribbean is nice, but it's too far. Rich people historically went to the south of France, Marabella and Sardinia. Some are here on Majorca already, but I can smell the indication that more are coming.” When they arrive Mr Kuhn will be ready to show them a property overlooking the Bay of Pollensa with a “guide price” of 34 million pounds.
The Sunday Times talked to other property agents who took a similarly positive view of Majorca's future while pointing out that the key question on the premium buyer's check list is: “Who is my neighbour?” Yes, that might be a problem although most of us would probably be happy to sell our properties to accommodate the super-rich's staff.
