WE are not alone in thinking that the new certificates which have replaced residencias are a complete waste of time and utterly useless. The German community is equally horrified and they have been busy writing to their government ministers to complain. For once it will be a European campaign because as you will have read in our letters section other non-Spanish Europeans are also up-in-arms. One of the first questions I intend to put to the person who will lead the next Balearic government will be over this issue. As far as I am concerned at the moment this is the issue of the day if not the year for expatriate Europeans. The stupidity of the legislation is evident to see and it must be causing plenty of headaches. As I said in this space last Saturday I will keep you updated on any developments in our campaign and thank you for all your support.

P.S. The announcement yesterday that the SAS group wants to sell its Spanish airline Spanair means that two of the three leading Spanish carriers are now for sale. Iberia is already on the market and it looks set to be taken over by private equity groups and British Airways. As regards the future of Spanair we will just have to wait and see but it is vital that a buyer is found fast.
