After months of mixed messages from the UK tourist industry about the Balearic holiday market this summer, I am pleasantly surprised to see reports stating that the market is holding up and that, at the moment, Majorca continues to be one of the top destinations - if not the top - again this year.

The only market showing a bit of weakness is Germany, with the leading European tour operators determined to get some revenue back on their investments in Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia by trying to route as many holidaymakers as possible towards the eastern Mediterranean and north Africa. That’s all very well and good but the bed capacity in these destinations is far inferior to that of here in the Balearics and the Spanish costas. So sooner or later, the eastern Med will be hit by overbooking and millions of holidaymakers will be forced to look elsewhere.

But it appears that the British, and to a lesser extent the domestic Spanish market, have stolen a march on other countries and got their bookings in first. Local hoteliers have begun offering discounts to keep the industry ticking over during the long gap between Easter and the start of the summer season and many early British birds have caught the worm. Those leaving it late in the hope of a mega eastern European deal may be both disappointed and also shocked by what their summer holiday is going to cost. Majorca owes the British a huge gesture of gratitude.

Well said Stuart!!! I certainly wouldnt describe my income as anywhere near high. I've recently been on a long weekend end as a lads trip, that we do every march. Did we go to magaluf and drink as much lager as we could, make a mess or fight? No. We booked a very nice Hotel in Palma. Did we drink much? Probably a bit too much, but only for my own head, everyone was well behaved. We sampled the local bars, tried the local food, got the train to Soller, and walked miles round the streets of Palma with my Camera.

This is all ontop of being a very loyal visitor to Pollença since I was 3 years old (34 now).

No matter how high/low someones incomes is, dont stereotype, and dont drive them away. You might just be losing the most loyal of visitors if you do.

Palmadave. Not everyone on a low to middle income are lager louts who get drunk every night and cause problems. I used to go to Soller up to eight times a year until I retired. Everything there has gone up and portion sizes and quality has as far as I’m concerned gone down. But hey. I don’t miss the hassle of going through airports to be ripped off by people who don’t like us.

Stuart, Which classification/s of the Socio-economic classification (UK) would you prefer or not prefer to visit Mallorca as tourists: AB, C1, C2 or DE?.

The tourists Majorca wants now is those with a lot of money. Normal people are now priced out.

Unfortunately all the articles in the MDB are being proven wrong regarding lack of tourists bookings. You would think local journalists could get these rather simple things accurate and stop inventing false politically motivated stories.

Hotel price hikes, tourist tax and a sense of not being as wanted as they once were (tourists in general), the British are standing firm? Is their something wrong with you ? We might be resilient but we are not thick so stop patronising us.

Having searched the Summer Season in Mallorca , for both Hotel and Flight prices. I am shocked at their high levels. In these days of economical approaches to ALL costings , perhaps the early warnings concerning bookings may be subjected to change. Cancellations could occur, as Tourists assess the total costs being charged in Mallorca. They will see much lower total costs in other Tourist destinations.
