British tourism to Majorca fell by 8 per cent last month but alarm bells are not ringing at the Balearic ministry for tourism because overall the number of tourists passing through the airport rose by three per cent in May. A total of 1.1 million German tourists came to the island in May, a rise of four per cent but British tourism (659,000 tourists) fell by 7.8 per cent. There were big increases in tourism from France, Italy, Finland and Poland.

The overall picture should cause some concern, especially as regards the British market. The fall in the value of sterling against the euro following the Brexit referendum has made Majorca an expensive place for British tourism and this is one of the reasons why Majorca's competitors are profiting from British tourism. Resorts in north Africa and Turkey are doing well. The German love affair with Majorca seems to be stronger than ever with half a million more Germans coming to the island compared with Britons in May.

So far it appears that the increase in the rate of the tourist tax has had little impact on German tourism but it could be one of the reasons for explaining the fall in British tourism. Hoteliers have said on numerous occasions that there is almost a waiting list to come to Majorca on holiday. Any fall will be easily compensated by a growth in another market. And this is what is happening this year so far. British tourism may have fallen but other nationalities are filling the gap.

No. I don’t want to stay in a hotel and prefer a rental apartment with a washing machine so can travel light and experience a home from home situation. Found it almost impossible to find a place with a reasonable rent down the South East of the island, so opted for the Alicante area. Found the restaurant prices on average 35% cheaper than on Mallorca PLUS the anti tourism issues along with knocking down the beach bars here and there. Also there are miles of beaches on the mainland which are sparsely occupied if that’s your desire. So long Mallorca. My favourite destination is now history

Went up with a friend who who is Asian, and there were multiple racist Spanish men in the night out. They thought it was funny. Smallest men I’ve ever met. Physically and mentallly. Classic Spanish.

The English will not be ripped off anymore. The anti tourist stance tourist tax and rising prices are putting them off when they can go elsewhere for half the price. Let the Germans take over. Their economy is better and they can afford to be ripped off.

Andy - not always the case. Many German tourists are just as badly behaved. Look at Cala Rajada and Arenal for example. You would not want to go there. Although they do have more disposal income to spend than the British. Henry - absolutely spot on as usual and as everyone said. Although the pound always drops in value in the summer when the bankers make most of their money. I would never again trust or forgive them given the amount of money they have cost me here over the years.

The Chickens are coming home to roost to roost now, this is due to a big drop in the value of the pound against the euro,anti-tourists protests, the feeling of being unwelcome, the apartment rental crack-down and being able to get better value for money elsewhere and being welcomed and when people return and tell their friends, others will abandon Majorca.

This is happening because they are pricing out the British in favour of other nationalities. Different prices for different countries (they can tell your country of origin from your internet details). Mallorca doesn't want the British because their drunken antics and the over zealous press give the island a bad name.

More European countries have wealth. The demographic will change and is changing.

The world is simple to travel around today due to the internet and smart phones. It would do the British good to travel elsewhere and one always learns when travelling. It is the greatest teacher.
