The Binissalem stone fair, which has been going since 2004, highlights stone work that is characteristic of Binissalem. where the local stone is technically a marble and comes in differing colours from dark blue to light beige. It is predominantly used for flooring, but exhibitors display all manner of products, e.g. sculptures, bowls, tables, and fountains.
The full title of the fair is Stone and Artisan, and this combination is no better reflected than in the skills of Mallorca’s dry-stone workers. The work of the “marger” is said to be one of the crafts most rooted in Mallorcan culture, and it dates back to the Muslim era before the Catalan conquest in 1229.
There is a guild of margers and a new school for future dry-stone workers has been established at the Raixa finca in Bunyola. At the fair, there will be a demonstration of this highly traditional craft.
