“The calm authority and probing insight make him one of the finest cellists around - expressive, unshowy and infinitely classy.”

This is how The Guardian has described German cellist Alban Gerhardt, who first achieved international recognition in 1991 at the age of 22 when he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Over the years since then, he has won numerous awards, including the BBC Music Magazine’s 2015 Award for his Deutsche Grammophon recording of Unsuk Chin’s Cello Concerto. This had been composed for Gerhardt, and he first performed it at the 2009 BBC Proms; this was in fact the world premiere.

He is the Balearic Symphony Orchestra’s latest invited soloist for a programme that will feature Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 2.
