Between 1916 and 1928, Italian Ottorino Respighi composed three orchestral tone poems. Considered to have been one of Italy’s leading composers of the early twentieth century, these three works brought him international fame. The first was Fountains of Rome, which musically depicts settings at Rome’s fountains at different times. The second, in 1924, was Pines of Rome, which was inspired in particular by the trees at the Villa Borghese gardens. Roman Festivals (Feste romane) completed the three and was the most demanding of the trilogy. It reflects celebrations in ancient and modern Rome. Álvaro Albiach of the Extremadura Orchestra is the invited conductor for the Balearic Symphony Orchestra’s interpretation of this trilogy.
