On Tuesday, the owners of the Hotel Formentor in Pollensa stated that all the work that has been carried out "conforms to legal requirements and necessary municipal permits".

This was in response to the order to halt work that was issued on Monday by Pollensa's mayor, Andrés Nevado. The mayor had himself responded to a town hall technical report which questioned the legality of the work, specifically the demolition of the old building, and also to complaints from the environmentalists GOB and the main opposition grouping at the town hall, Junts Avançam.

The order was sent to Formentor Bay S.L. the company for the hotel project, which has stressed that this is "the main tourism project under development on the island". It has an investment of more than 260 million euros, "aimed at repositioning an historic hotel on the map of the luxury tourism world". "It is a project based on firm sustainability criteria, oriented towards quality tourism and enhancement of the hotel's local economic impact; the workforce will be trebled."

According to legally established procedures, the owners have 15 days to present a challenge to the stoppage order. As the processing for new licences for demolition and reconstruction started some weeks ago, it could be that these licences are obtained before the 15 days, meaning that the mayor's decree would, in practice, be without effect.

Meanwhile, the company was given 24 hours on Monday to cease work or face a sealing-off of the site and fines.
