There has been a rumour of squatters at the Bellevue complex in Puerto Alcudia for some weeks. The rumour now appears as if it may be true. They are in the Neptuno II block of what is Mallorca's largest tourist accommodation complex; with over 1,400 apartments and studios it is one of Europe's largest. It is said there are as many as fifty people squatting in the building; Bellevue has seventeen apartment blocks in all.

One of the women living there says they had permission to live in an apartment until the end of the tourist season. "We can’t pay the price of a flat and here we are." So were they squatters? Or did they have permission and can no longer pay? A few weeks ago it was said there were squatters in another block - Apolo. But it turned out that these were people to whom apartments had been let over the winter and who are working at the complex.

Bellevue is not a secure site. Access to its component parts is straightforward. If these people genuinely are squatters, this won't come as any great surprise to people who live locally.

The management of Bellevue is clouded by some uncertainty. The current owners are BlueBay Hotels & Resorts. Just over a year ago, it was announced that there was to be a 15-year strategic alliance with World2Meet, which is part of Iberostar. World2Meet was to take on the management, and its O7 Hotels division did indeed manage the complex last year.

Curiously perhaps, O7 didn't include Bellevue on its website last year; it isn't there now. On social media in June it was reported that O7 directors plus World2Meet and Blue Bay executives had met at Bellevue for team building and to consolidate the O7 mission. It was about the only reference to Bellevue. The agreement is seemingly up for re-negotiation. BlueBay have meanwhile said they are preparing for the start of the new season.
