J K Rowling who has had the courage to attempt to prove that as an author she is not just a “one-trick pony”. Admittedly that pony of the prodigiously successful Harry Potter books was enough to sustain anyone's reputation but even so Rowling has wanted to write a conventional novel and win new readers. Early reactions to The Casual Vacancy have been mixed although generally favourable despite the influential New York Times calling it “dull and lacking emotional depth is a major literary figure and will remain so for a long time.
