WILL politicians ever learn? The Spanish Socialist Party suffered a major defeat in Sunday´s local elections and now they are involved in a major leadership with blame game well underway. What is pretty clear is that former Balearic leader Francesc Antich will be stepping down with a top job in Madrid or retirement from politics on the horizon.

Now, the person who looks set to replace Antich is the former President of the Council of Majorca, Francina Amengol. But yesterday it was rumoured that some section of the party favour former Mayor of Palma, Aina Calvo. To make matters worse a leadership battle will soon be underway in Madrid to replace Prime Minister Rodriguez Zapatero who is stepping down at the next general elections. Surely, it would have been a better idea if the socialists had put on a united front for a few months and then had their leadership battle? I suspect that Amengol would end up with the top job because she has plenty of support. But we will just have to wait and see. Meanwhile, new Balearic President Jose Ramon Bauza is desperate to take over.

His crushing victory was the final nail in Antich´s coffin. Some are saying that he could step down shortly after Bauza takes office. One thing for sure the Spanish Socialists are experiencing one of their biggest crisis to date with the economic downturn and record high unemployment playing a big role in their loss of popularity The party is certainly over for them.
