THE convention centre in Palma is rapidly becoming Majorca´s answer to the Millenium Dome in London (but without the happy ending). Work on the project has been halted as a result of a dispute between the builders and the city council and local government. It is already many months behind schedule and more embarrassing still is the fact that it will not be open for the annual convention of the Association of British Travel Agents later this year. New Mayor of Palma, Mateu Isern, has promised that the project will be completed, but it will be a case of better late than never.

It should have been a showpiece building for the city and I sincerely hope, that one day it will be just that. But at the moment the whole project is being dogged by a whole series of problems which need to be resolved soon. Palma wants to be a serious player in the convention market but at the moment it can´t even ensure that the project is completed on time. Not, a good start, especially when competition in this market is tough.
