DEAR SIR

I have read your article regarding the problem with taxis at Palma airport this year, with and acknowledge that there are less holiday makers to the island this year so trade for everyone is difficult.

Can I just say that in the UK however that within the most expensive areas of England for up to 4 persons to get the 70 Km's to London Gatwick Airport or the return from Gatwick is 48 euros, and to or from London Heathrow which is 100 km's is 70 euros and there is no limit to how many operators there are to either pick up or drop off.

The fuel costs are higher in the UK than in Majorca so possibly the authorities should think that annual increases irrespective of market conditions are not a good way of protecting the Taxi/ hire business. The costing of this would mean that a journey to Cala Millor and a return back to the airport which is approximately 70km's on UK terms would be 45 - 50euros each way not the 75 - 85 euros charged at Palma airport or Cala Millor. Why not free the market and let it find its own level with Taxi drivers or their employers doing online bookings at an advertised competitive price to those charged on the Taxirank. Prices will then drop and you will have more customers thereby saving wasted hours waiting for fares on the rank.

Yours, B Torkington
