...for the spirit and courage of the thirty-three Chilean gold and copper miners who were located safe and well in a refuge area some 700 metres (2'300 ft) below the surface after a desperate 17-day search to discover their whereabouts. They will need all their courage as they wait perhaps four months for an escape shaft to be drilled. The mine, first used in 1889, was the scene of a fatal accident in 2007. The longest previously recorded survival in a deep mine is 25 days in China.
