YET again Majorca is allegedly enjoying a record holiday season but why do I find myself disagreeing with the local authorities and the local hoteliers? The reason is because everyone I speak to involved in tourism says the exact opposite. Bar and restaurant takings are down because tourists are spending less. The hotels are full thanks to enormous discounts and this year there has been an enormous growth in all inclusive holidays.

Tourists stay in their hotels on cheap packages costing in some cases a few hundred pounds. The figures have been inflated this year thanks to the fact that thousands of tourists came here instead of resorts in North African, who were experiencing internal turmoil. Majorca is rapidly becoming an all-inclusive discount area. I just feel sorry for the hundreds of bar and restaurant owners who are unable to compete against hotels offering all inclusive packages. Record season, I think not, because until tourists start spending again, the recession will continue.
