UNIONISTS have been left stunned by the fact that unemployment in the Balearics has risen during the peak of a summer season which some senior ministers in Madrid have been claiming would be one of the best for at least five years and produce pre-recession tourism figures. Apparently, in the Canaries, the up lift in tourism has led to a significant improvement in the employment market - here the reverse has happened and local union leaders are deeply concerned. After eight months of a continual fall in the number of people out of work, the alleged summer boom has done little for the employment market and does not appear to have kick started the local economy.

The retail sector has complained of a gradual decline in takings as have bars and restaurants in resorts across the Balearics while hoteliers are not being paid by some of the main tour operators on time and are unable to pay their staff.

And, the unemployment figures are only going to continue rising as the region enters in to what could be a winter of discontent because the new government is saddled with huge debts and the banks still reluctant to release funds to the small business sector.

This summer season was supposed to have helped the Balearics claw its way out of recession. “We are the best placed to emerge from the crisis first,” politicians claimed..

It's time for less talk and more action.
