In his most substantial act of “change” since becoming president, Barack Obama abandoned a controversial missile defence system based in the Czech Republic and Poland. The system was promoted by President George W Bush and had been strongly criticised by Russia.

A UN report on Israel's attack on Gaza eight months ago contained strong condemnation of the Israel army's tactics against the civilian population, and also criticised the Palestinian Hamas movement for its rocket attacks on Israel.
