WHAT has the Balearic government achieved during its three and a half years in power? I have to ask this question because they are now entering their final few months ahead of the local elections next year.

The coalition government has been dogged by political infighting and allegations of political corruption which led Balearic leader Francesc Antich to dismiss the Majorcan Unionists from his coalition. But Antich has actually achieved little and there is no real project which he can put his name to. Previous Balearic leader, Jaume Matas, who is facing a lengthy jail term on charges of political corruption could name a whole series of projects which he masterminded ranging from the Palma Metro, to the Palma Arena and also a series of big road building projects and the new National Health Hospital.

Now, granted many of these projects have been engulfed by allegations of “back-handers” and of corruption. But this Balearic government has done very little. Yes, the current economic climate has not helped but some voters will be asking themselves whether the Balearics is a better place now than it was before? I would say no, unfortunately the coalition has not been a success and what is even more sad is that politics in the Balearics has been severely tarnished.
