...for the ruling powers of Sri Lanka who have this week ensured that the hero of their victory in the civil war against the Tamil Tigers would be found guilty of fraud and sentenced to imprisonment. This extraordinary reversal of fortune followed from the decision of General Sarath Fonseka to challenge the incumbent president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, in the election held earlier this year. Fonseka, a political novice, was unsuccessful but the mere act of standing against Rajapaksa seems to have infuriated the winner.
