By Jason Moore JUST what happened inm Andratx on Sunday morning? In Palma a few drops of rain, 25 kilometres awat a full blown (excuse the pun!) storm with hail, high winds and torrential rain. The port looked like a war-zone and in Andratx town the main supermarket was flooded and was unable to open. It had to be seen to be believed? Businesses in the port were simply blown away and on Sunday lunch-time only a small number were able to open largely thanks to the skill and Dunkirk spirit of their staff. Quite incredible. I just don't know what is happening to the weather in Majorca at the moment; a July with record temperatures and extremely high humidity which almost made it unbearable; an August with just a few days of sunshine (morning to night) and September has seen heavy rains and freaks storms. Global warming appears to be here to stay and it rapidly ruining the Majorcan climate. Up until recently people would have laughed if you said you needed central heating and air conditioning; these days its a fact of life. Unfortunately, Majorca's principal industry depends on sun. The summers are getting shorter. My heart goes out to those tourists who decided to have a day out in Andratx yesterday. Climate change is here to stay and I think the time has come for Majorca to be prepared for the worst.
