DEAR SIR

SO Gordon Brown is backing/promoting Tony Blair for the future/planned Presidency of the EU, well that should prove the “Kiss of death” for Blair's chances, as could there be another who has such a pathetic record of getting things wrong as Brown?

From when Gordon Brown first became Chancellor of the Exchequer deciding to sell off Britain's gold at rock bottom prices, that have since quadrupled in price, to a constant flow of late events.

How anyone could devalue the Ghurkas, held in such high esteem by the British public, by excluding a section of those brave soldiers who have fought our wars for a century from the right of retirement/ pensions in the UK is beyond belief.

Then, he managed to almost nullify the Territorial Army with a proposed paltry 20 million defense cut in spending.
It is a “paltry” amount in relation to the, in excess of 40 million pounds annual outlay by the Military Of Defense. That particular govt. department manages to spend excessively on badly made contracts, cannot supply in the field, in time, helicopters, body armour, vehicles to withstand roadside bombs etc etc.

The list goes on. It should be remembered that whichever departments, minister/MP gets it wrong, Brown is the overall “man in charge” and most definitely “the buck stops there!” Do we see anyone sacked, or choosing to resign, hardly.

Other little nuggets that appear from time to time, the introduction to abolish the ten pence basic tax allowance, that after being proposed, showed it would hit the lowest paid worse! Then of course the reduction in VAT, totally ineffectual, but lost the state 12 billion pounds when it was most needed. Is it any wonder that Britain, amongst the leading economic nations is the only one not out of a recession?

The worst thing is, until there is an election and change of government, this will continue.
Yours,

Graham Phillips
DEAR SIR

HAVING read a recent article in the MDB about another campaign to get the ‘tarjeta de residencia' reinstated, I would like to put forward a hypothetical but quite probable question in this day and age of economic crisis.

How do I identify my self, legally if:-

I have no money so can't afford to keep my car so let my driving licence run out. Bang goes one form of legal ID

Again I have no money and can't afford to renew my passport. Bang goes another form of legal ID

Unless I am missing something is there any other form of ID that has my fingerprint/photo/signature that will be accepted legally?

Yours sincerely, Jacqueline Hendry
