THE local ministry for tourism is in the process of drawing up legislation which will allow hoteliers to transform their businesses into residential complexes or condominiums. Who will benefit? The big hotels chains who are struggling to fill their hotels during the summer season. Who will be the losers? Hundreds of hotel staff who will effectively lose their jobs. The local ministry for tourism, believes this is the way forward, the unions quite understandbly disagree. Now, these so-called residential complexes (or reformed hotels) will either operate as timeshares or just apartment blocks.
But it appears that the local ministry for tourism is prepared to introduce legislation which will allow owners to rent out their apartments with the full blessing of the local authorities. This will obviously spark some controversy because holiday home owners have been trying to rent out their properties legally for years and now they cound find that a certain few can do so, while others can't. Not fair really.
