THE new Balearic leader, Jaume Matas, will be holding an urgent meeting with the Balearic tourist industry to save the summer season as soon as he is sworn in as President. Millions of euros are to spent on promotion campaigns to try and attract holidaymakers. But the solution to many of Majorca's woes can be found on the sports pages of newspapers across Spain and Britain. All Sr. Matas must hope is that David and Victoria Beckham decide to buy a house in Majorca. This will be the best promotion the island can ask for judging by the frenzy which the England skipper and Real Madrid's latest signing causes. I already know that a number of leading estate agents are on the case and for the sake of Majorca I hope they are successful. Instead of spending money on campaigns I would advice the Balearic government to get their act together and start lobbying the player as soon as possible. You can safely bet that the more go ahead regions such as Andalucia are already dreaming up a ploy to try and attract Becks to their shores. We have an edge because Beckham's Real Madrid team-mate Steve McManaman already owns a home here.
It may be a sad reflection on modern-day Britain for so much to revolve around a footballer but it is a fact of life and Beckham is enormous. If he does decide to buy a home here we at the Bulletin will do our bit...he can have a free subcription! The race to sign-up Beckham is on and let's just hope that Majorca is on pole position.
