By Jason Moore TWO of the leading political figures in the Balearics are betting everything on becoming the next Balearic leader. Jaume Matas, the President for the last four years, has signalled that he will step down if he is unable to form a coalition government with the Majorcan Unionists. Francesc Antich, leader of the Balearic socialists and also a former Balearic President has already resigned his seat at the parliament in Madrid in the hope that he will be forming the next government. These are very interesting times politically and it is still unclear who will lead the new Balearic government. Maria Antonia Munar, leader of the Unionists and an important match-maker, has been courted by both parties. Unofficially the socialists are offering her the Council of Majorca, and the Vice Presidency of the Balearic government, in this way Francesc Antich would be President and Aina Calvo would be Mayor of Palma. The Partido Popular is offering the whole Council of Majorca and one of the Balearics' ministeries. This offer, according to the Partido Popular, is better than what the socialists have offered. However, the negotiations are continuing and I suspect there are going to be plenty more twists and turns until the matter is finally resolved.
