James Cameron, film director (Titanic, Avatar) and now very deep sea pioneer with his successful seven-hour solo voyage in Deepsea Challenger to the MarianaTrench, the seven-miles deepest place in the world's oceans in the South West Pacific. Jacques Picard made the same descent in 1960 but stayed for only ten minues; Cameron remained on the sea bed for three hours. He said it looked like the moon. The world will have to wait to see what he discovered but it's clear that scientifically his enterprise is the start of something big. (R.F.)
