l Andrew Strauss who has resigned as England's cricket captain after an impressive career in that role which included victories in Australia and a place at the top of the world rankings. The timing of his resignation was well judged and perfectly played. If he had stayed Strauss would have faced a series in India and another Ashes encounter as his own reliability as opening batsman declined. The unpleasant recent incidents over Kevin Pietersen's selfishness may also have been a factor but, essentially, Strauss knew when it was time to declare his distinguished innings over.
