Having a great number of English speaking friends who live in Soller – Australian, Irish, Scottish, Welsh and American - I am appalled by Shirley Roberts column in Tuesday's Bulletin in which she refers to local expat residents of the town only as ‘English'.

Perhaps being from North London it follows that nothing exists north of Watford or south of Tonbridge, or west of Bristol. How sad.
You would expect that a columnist in the Bulletin would have the nous to know that the correct terms are ‘English-speaking' or ‘British'. You only have to consider the allegiances of Sir Chris Hoy and Andy Murray at the Olympic Games to understand the difference.

For those of us from north of the Border, who believe in a United Kingdom, we regard this sort of ignorance as further ammunition for the likes of Alex Salmond.

Yours faithfully, Andrew Ferguson
