May I put the myth of extra winter flights from the UK to bed once and for all; at least for those of us in the North East of England and Scotland. We now have no direct winter flights at all. It took us 12 hours and great expense (nearly £500 per person) to fly to Palma from Newcastle via Barcelona.

Many of our friends, who would have come out with us, are not prepared or able to give up two full days of their holidays to do so. The most Northerly UK airport that has a direct flight between November and April is Manchester, which, for a significant proportion of British people is not a convenient or a viable option. Only three years ago there were direct flights from Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow throughout the winter. Those from Newcastle at least were full.

The Island would attract many more winter visitors if the authorities addressed this problem.
