IN this space, about a month ago, I launched a broadside against the city council for not giving Palma a festive feel. I admit, I was mistaken, I would say that the council have done a first class job from the Christmas lights to the Three King´s parade. Palma has looked very good. The King´s parade was first rate and the planning was pure perfection with the King´s arriving on time and being at the Plaza Cort at the right moment.

Even the festive markets in the Plaza España and Plaza Mayor have been very good, my only criticism is that the items on sale are expensive. The navity scenes are also very good and are well worth visiting. I don´t really think, in these hard times that the council could have done much more, to give the city a festive feel. The downside was that as there were so few hotels open Palma could only be enjoyed by the resident population which is a pity. It is a shame that Palma was not promoted as a place for tourists to spend their Christmas holidays. And the party continues in Palma with the annual San Sebastian festivities which get underway next week. While the budget has been reduced this year there are still a wide range of events including all the open air concerts. Palma has plenty to offer and with some imagination and a major promotion campaign it could attract far more tourists.
