OVER the last few years local politics has been dogged by corruption allegations; a number of senior figures from the previous Balearic government allegedly appear to be involved from former leader Jaume Matas to the President of the Council of Majorca, Maria Antonia Munar.

Now, what I find amazing is how many details of all these cases find their way into local newspapers. Now, don´t get me wrong, congratulations to my colleagues on some fine investigative journalism but there is a danger that all this information which is appearing in print could in some ways affect the trials of these senior politicians. Jaume Matas, who now lives in the United States, has said that he is concerned that he will not get a fair trial in Majorca. The job of the media is to report on the facts and at the moment none of these people have actually gone to trial. Maria Antonia Munar, now the speaker of the Balearic parliament has warned against trial by media. But I don´t think the media is to blame. All this information is coming from somewhere. Some political commentators have said that all these trials are politically motivated. I sincerely doubt it but I do believe that justice should have its way first before all the information comes out in print.
