FOR Jimmy Carter, former President of the United States, who at the age of 87 continues to lead the activities of the Carter Center, the human rights organisation he founded after his single-term presidency thirty years ago.

Mr Carter has been in Egypt where the Center has been involved in validating the elections there as “free and fair”. With typical frankness he accepted that America had supported a military-backed president for three decades: “It's true, and I can't say I wasn't doing that as well.”
