I DO not want to talk down the local economy but surely reports of a fantastic summer season in 2012 are off the mark. Now, don´t get me wrong I would love nothing more than the Balearics to enjoy a fantastic season but I can´t really see this happening.

Take the Balearics´ principal tourist market, Britain. The economy is in recession and 2012 will be a year to remember in Britain with the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. More Britons are going to stay at home and miss their annual date with Majorca. The local tourist industry appears to be euphoric at the moment but I am afraid to say that their joy may not last too long. There are dark clouds on the horizon and even the German economy is experiencing problems. The Balearics needs a good summer season to breathe some life into the economy but at best I can see visitor numbers being the same as last year and spending probably down. For the moment the euphoria should be placed on hold until at least the middle of the year.
