By Jason Moore IT is all very well the local ministry for health calling for calm over swine fever but they must be seen to be taking all the necessary action. All over the weekend in the Spanish newspapers there were reports that staff at the Son Llatzer hospital (where the island´s first mortal victim of the disease died last week) were claiming that they were not impressed at the actions which had been taken. There was one report yesterday which claimed that hospital doctors didn´t know that she had swine fever until after she died. These reports do not help calm public fears over the disease. Also, then there is the issue of holiday bookings. The German media have reported extensively on the death of the Nigerian woman and there is a fear that swine flu could hit holiday bookings to the islands. Swine fever is not a problem which only affects the Balearics but the local ministry for health should ensure that island hospitals and medical centres are totally prepared. The local ministry for health needs to work with medical staff and with the public issuing bulletins and ensuring that everyone knows what they have to do if they believe that they are suffering from swine fever. We are all totally calm but give us the information as well.
