I am pleased to see that at last local councils are taking action to resolve the problem of rowdy and drunken behaviour in some of the our principal holiday resorts. Calvia council have announced that there will be a permanent police presence in the infamous Calle Punta Ballena in Magalluf. This is good news. Initially about eight officers will be on duty. Some local residents say that more are needed but it is certainly a step in the right direction. In Palma, the city council have gone even further saying that they want to end binge drinking along the seafront in the Playa de Palma and have also said that they want to take Arenal and Can Pastilla upmarket. Binge drinking tourists are out and big spending holidaymakers from the Gulf and Far East are in. The city council has also put more officers on duty in the resorts. It is a start. I wrote in this space a few months ago that I was concerned that some of our holiday resorts were becoming “no go areas.” Someone appears to have been listening and action is now being taken.
