Dear Sir, THE new no smoking law is a non event here in Alcudia in most of the bars and restaurants.. The average proprietor is quick to tell you that the majority of his customers are smokers and he does not want to lose their business (read profit). The health of his staff, often members of his own family seems of little importance when weighed against those profits. The sooner these restaurants are hit with hefty fines the better, though I really doubt if this will ever happen. One cannot help noticing though that the restaurants who are obeying the law are the ones where the food and service are outstanding such as Sa Taverna, Pierro Rossi, Can Moncho, El Jardin etc.. These restaurants are full and enjoying excellent repeat business. I guess the others feel that the smell of tobacco in the putrid air might help conceal the lack of flavour of the food and calm the impatience of their customers as they try to attract the waiters attention.

John Roberts.
