MICHELLE Obama, the U.S. first lady spent about two hours in Majorca on Sunday but her visit is already under fire in the U.S. as a waste of tax-payer´s money. In some ways I understand all the controversy especially as the U.S. is in the midst of a severe recession and public spending is being cutback. But also surely Mrs. Obama could have spent some more time in Majorca and enjoyed its many delights. I´ve heard of flying visits but this was almost a joke. Her motorcade also stayed clear of the Paseo Maritimo so the only glimpse she got of the island was the airport, the Via Cintura ringroad and Marivent Palace. I would have thought that her timetable could have been extended even for a few more hours. The reason why the U.S. first lady came to Spain in the first place rather escapes me. It was a rather odd decision especially when you consider that the official side lasted for about two hours when she met the King and Queen at the Marivent Palace on Sunday. The U.S. media have been openly criticial and have said in no uncertain terms that the First Lady should have holidayed in the U.S. All I hope is that she returns soon and on this occasion is able to enjoy some of the delights of Majorca, its food and its people.
