MAGALLUF is frequently in the spotlight and hits the headlines for all the wrong reasons. It is the place many people love to hate. While it has its problems I would say that it is no worse than the Paseo Maritimo at the weekends or even some parts of Arenal. Take Palma´s premier promenade. Despite frequent claims that action is being taken, the illegal street parties are still taking place at the weekend, leaving behind a trail of rubbish. Then you´ve got Arenal, where tourists sit on the promenade in groups drinking lethal cocktails from buckets through straws. Little or nothing is said about it. Compared to other areas of the island I would say that Magalluf this year has been relatively quiet while Arenal has seen plenty of incidents involving tourists. There is plenty which could be improved in Magalluf but it is not that bad and doesn´t really deserve the reputation it has got of being one of the “worst tourist areas” on the island. For many Majorcans Magalluf appears to be a no-go zone. The local authorities are often saying that they would like to clean up Magalluf and give it a new image. Yes, this is a good idea but the Paseo Maritimo, Arenal and other tourists resorts on the island need similar action.
