SHOPS in the Balearics will finally reopen on Tuesday after a three day break, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It is scandalous that shops can close for so long. But the shopkeepers are not to blame, it is the Balearic government which has introduced legislation which states that shops must close for three days over this festive period.

This is a scandalous state of affairs. Surely shops would be able to open when they like not when then the Balearic government sees fit. In these hard times it would be a good idea that shops re-opened again on Sunday for Boxing Day. I think the time has come for the local authorities to start looking at the issue of shop opening hours, It shouldn´g be regulated, shops should be free to open when they like.

Wouldn´t it have been a good idea to have extended opening hours ahead of the long Christmas break? What about the midnight closing campaign. Now, I know that many people feel that shops in Britain have gone completely overboard opening even on Christmas Day. But what happens if you run-short of a festive essential over this period. The local government has allowed more super-stores to open in Palma which is an excellent idea. But what have they decided to look at the issues of shop opening hours as well. Perhaps this could be one of their New Year resolutions.
