Hoteliers must be kicking themselves, surely. With the vast majority of resort hotels now closed or in the process of closing for the winter, staff will be packing up as the island enjoys a wonderful Indian summer with temperatures well into the mid-twenties. For golfers, yesterday’s Bulletin Golf Cup was the perfect example of why the season has got to be extended.

The mixture of a quality golf course just yards from the beach, an excellent restaurant with a huge sun terrace and spectacular views and, of course, great fun on the golf course, this is what people want to come to Majorca for in the off-season when the island is quiet and less hectic. Tens of thousands of golfers would come during the winter but even the Majorcan Golf Federation has aired its concerns over lack of flights and accommodation.

I think yesterday’s event in Camp de Mar said it all. Winter tourism, or at least a longer season, has to succeed.
