Spend, spend and spend appears to have been the attitude over the festive period on Majorca. The out-of-date trading restrictions appear to have been thrown out the window, with retailers cashing in on the Christmas spend at all times of the day and all days of the week. Restaurants were packed: some of the more popular eateries on the island had been booked out months in advance. It appeared that the majority on Majorca had suddenly awoken from their recession spending freeze and gone on a major spree. Eating at home with the family also appears to have gone out the window with restaurants reporting more bookings than ever on Christmas and Boxing Day. And shops are now preparing for another big spend: for Three Kings. The feelgood factor appears to have returned, which is interesting because the government that claims to have nursed the country back to good economic health failed to secure a majority in the general election. But I think that Christmas 2015 will mark a turning point on Majorca. The bigger stores appeared to be open almost every Sunday and even on key holidays. Are we moving towards a more liberal retail attitude on Majorca? I think so. The bigger stores want to open as much as possible and the government appears to be supporting them. Judging by the large crowds at many of the stores on the island, Majorca is heading for a great festive season which will end the recessionary blues ... for now.
