A year ago this month political change arrived in the Balearics. The Partido Popular, which had swept to victory by a landslide just four years earlier, were ejected from office with a bruising defeat. It was the dawn of a new political era of coalition government: a left-wing nationalist grouping of parties.

Initially, many thought that the coalition would not last because it would be a nightmare to bring such different views together under one government. But overall it could be said that the doom merchants were wrong. The Balearic government appears stable and the infighting has been kept to a minimum. Even key and controversial legislation, such as the tourist tax, is being introduced. So coalition government can work.

Pedro Sanchez, the leader of the Socialist Party nationwide, said that the Balearics were a clear example of how multi-party government works. But I would warn him; it may work here but I am not too sure about a national government.
