Palma City Council's ambitious plan to operate free jump-on jump-off electric buses through the old part of Palma was put to the test yesterday. The city council hailed the way in which the special short (nine-metre) bus was guided smoothly through the narrow streets, round the roadworks and followed the diversions a success, but the driver was assisted by Local Police motorcycle outriders making sure the route was kept clear. On a normal day with vehicles backed up behind the buses stopping every few metres down the narrow lanes, patient drivers will be tested to their limits. Initially there were plans to make the old part of the capital a traffic free zone, especially redesigned for pedestrians who would be able to stroll from the Cathedral all the way up to the Plaza de España and the Avenidas without having to dodge the traffic.
