Over the past few years the Balearic population has grown faster than any other autonomous region in Spain. According to an annual report released yesterday, over the last few years, the Balearic population has grown by 4.75 per cent to nearly 800.000 inhabitants. The long range forecasts are for further growth at perhaps an even faster rate. Just before the leader of the Balearic Partido Popular, Jaume Matas, was voted out of office last year as Chief Minister, he called for the population to double within a space of ten years and in order for the Balearics to maintains its healthy rate of economic growth and rising demands from a continually growing population, an estimated 15'000 immigrant workers are needed every year to meet the damnds of the manual labour force, such as the construction industry. The population of Palma, has grown by just under five per cent and the toll it is taking on the city is starting to show.
