Four people including two policemen were injured in scuffles which broke out near the Plaza de España during yesterday's strike by construction workers. The incident ended in five arrests. Unions claimed that the strike - a two day one called on a nation-wide level - had the backing of between 75 and 80 per cent of the workers, but management said that the incidence was minimal. The strike was in protest at the high number of accidents in the construction sector, and in a tragic coincidence, two workers died in labour accidents yesterday in Barcelona and Alicante. Nine construction workers have died in the Balearics in the past two years. The incidents occurred when pickets belonging to the CNT were asked by police to identify themselves. The pickets refused and a skirmish broke out ending with four injured. CNT sources said that they are studying the possibility of filing a complaint for ill treatment. The strike proceeded smoothly for the rest of the day.
