The General Directive for Industry of the Balearic government has authorised the company Repsol to install a propane gas service in Mahon and it is anticipated that this service will begin in about six months' time. Jose Esteban Mateo, chief of the commercial area of Repsol Gas in the Balearics, said yesterday that when the company has received official notification from the government, they will begin to connect the streets which already have pipes to the fuel tanks situated next to the Mahon cementery. The director general for Industry of the autonomic executive, Francisca Vives, signed the administrative authorisation last month for Repsol to render this service in Mahon. Esteban indicated that Repsol has already made contact with the council of Alaior to install piped gas in this town and determine the location of fuel tanks. The technical specialists of this company have also begun surveys on the work involved to pipe gas to the municipalities of Cituadella and Ferreries. Repsol will be progressively working on gas installation in these neighbourhoods until all the inner city area of Mahon has piped gas, which will take an estimated five years.
